What is Skin Asthma?

Skin asthma (also known as atopic dermatitis or eczema) is a relapsing skin condition that causes inflammation, redness, and itchy rashes. It’s a largely genetic skin disorder characterized by an inherited barrier defect in the skin’s protective covering function.

What Causes Skin Asthma?

There’s no known single cause for skin asthma. You know you have it when the following appears: dry, rough, scaly skin; bumpy skin on the back of the arms and front thighs; changes in skin color; blisters; intense itching, redness of the skin; thickened skin after constant scratching; crusting.

How To Treat Skin Asthma?

Medication for skin asthma includes antihistamines. Oral antihistamines help relieve itchiness caused by skin inflammation while topical medicines on the skin are necessary most of the time. Topical medicines include anti-inflammatory ointments or creams, topical immunomodulators, and moisturizing creams or lotions.

My Daughter’s Journey in Battling with Skin Asthma

Aveeno: The Products I Use For My Daughter's Skin Asthma

It was February 2012 when my daughter Kimy was diagnosed with skin asthma. I didn’t know this type of illness existed so I was really sad when the doctor broke the news to us. Skin asthma usually appears in Kimy’s elbows, back of her knees, arms, mouth and around her eyes.

Her previous pedia prescribed topical steroids, which I wasn’t too happy about because using products with this ingredient is very bad for the skin if used for long periods of time.

I had a hard time choosing which products would suit Kimy’s sensitive skin. I have tried lots of them and her current pedia, who’s also an allergy and immunology specialist, advised us to use products that will moisturize her skin and are gentle enough to use as often as possible.

Kimy’s skin must stay moisturized so I need to apply a moisturizer on her whole body twice a day or as needed. The moisturizer is formulated for very dry itchy skin and helps restore skin barrier. She also has to use a very mild cleanser which serves as her soap.

After I discovered my daughter has skin asthma and was advised by the pedia to use this one specific product, I’ve been loyal to it for many years (been using it since 2012). It’s so expensive though, but still I let my daughter use it because it’s effective and it suits Kimy’s skin really well.

It was just last year when I discovered Aveeno for my daughter. At first I was hesitant but I tried it anyway to see if it will be suitable for Kimy. I’ve seen advertisements about Aveeno saying how effective it is especially for those suffering from skin asthma. To my delight, Kimy loves it! Aveeno is as effective as the previous brand but it’s more affordable. The Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream is just half the price of the previous one she used. It really is a good find!

Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream

What I like about Aveeno Baby Soothing Relief Moisture Cream is it contains active naturals colloidal oatmeal and rich emollients that soothe dry, sensitive skin. This is hypoallergenic, has no artificial fragrance added, and it moisturizes for 24 hours! I just love how it’s absorbed quickly and is gentle with Kimy’s dry sensitive skin.

Aveeno Baby Soothing Bath Solution

The Aveeno Baby Soothing Bath Solution is a new product which I also like. It also has natural colloidal oatmeal and is hypoallergenic, steroid-free, paraben-free, and most of all it has a seal from National Eczema Association. When dispersed in water, this powder forms a milky bath that soothes as it naturally cleanses without soap.

Kimy said that it’s very calming, and she likes it a lot! Every after bath using this solution, it’s just amazing how her skin becomes softer and smoother, and her dry, irritated, sensitive skin is relieved.

Aside from those two products from Aveeno, I’ve also tried the Aveeno Baby Wash and Shampoo for Kimy and the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion for myself.
